About Disciples of Christ

Disciples is a liberal mainline denomination that emphasizes strong community life and mission, Christian unity, openness to many points of view and kinds of people. Each congregation is self-governing, setting budgets, managing property, calling pastoral leadership and other staff. Congregations are linked in Regions – we are part of the 52-congregation Nebraska Region of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), based in Lincoln. We work closely with our Regional Minister, Ken Moore, and his staff who offer wise council and educational support. (www.disciples-ne.org)

Disciples do not dictate theology to one another. You will find a wide variety of beliefs in the various congregations. Generally we agree on the following practices:

	Communion every Sunday. Disciples worship is based in the ritual of Communion.
	Believer’s baptism by immersion. In our history we have emphasized delaying baptism until a young person or adult chooses that ritual for themselves as a way of committing their lives to the path of Jesus. At North Side, we also allow families to choose infant baptism for the children.
	The unity of all Christians. Disciples are involved in working together beyond denominational boundaries in the inclusive and open spirit that Jesus lived. We discourage any put-downs of other traditions.
	The centrality of scripture as a source of guidance, insight, and inspiration.
	There is no distinction between clergy and laity. All are ministers of the gospel.
