About North Side Christian Church
North Side is a progressive
Christian community.
Sharon Harding: I am accepted and loved with all my imperfections.
As we live out our vision of being an oasis to the spiritually thirsty, we emphasize six core values:
Courage Creativity Diversity
Joy Love Spirituality
We take the Bible seriously but not literally. We look at scripture metaphorically and in its historical context. God created us with the ability to reflect and reason. We approach scripture out of our personal experience and context. Through this lens we find God continuing to encounter us through these ancient texts.
God is a resurrecting God. Through God’s amazing power and love, the evil done to Jesus was transformed and God continues to offer resurrecting love and possibilities to each of us
God is with us in the real world of daily life. In our spiritual lives we seek to allow the spirit of God to live more fully in us.
We allow God to shape us through the discipline of prayer and meditation. We pray, not to change God, but to allow God to change us.
We view sin as anything that separates us from God’s amazing love. Sin is not a specific list of things to avoid but anything which causes us to turn away from God’s welcoming spirit.
We emphasize Jesus as one whose life shows us a path of love. Jesus is our role model, showing us how to live in openness to the spirit of God in all of life.
We emphasis the life of faith now more than life in the hereafter. The goal of faith is a fruitful and fulfilled life here and now. Whatever eternal life might be, we trust in God’s mercy and care.
There are many paths that open people to God. Other Christian traditions, Buddhism, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, native traditions, and other traditions are authentic paths of faith. Learning from them enhances our understanding of our own path. We reach out to people who do not have not spiritual home or tradition.
We are called to be good citizens in our community, our nation, and our world.
We are called to make a positive difference. We are called to make this world a better place out of our commitment to God.
All people were created and are loved and valued by God. Your race, heritage, gender, sexual orientation, economic status, education, age or ability are part of the beauty of God’s creation in you. Christ’s welcome is our welcome.
John C. Kuehl: North Side is like coming to a family renunion.
There are no distinctions between clergy and lay people. The ministry and mission of the church is a joint effort of pastor and people of God.
Each person's faith is valued. We do not dictate beliefs or doctrines. We grow in understanding and faith as we work and talk with one another.
Learning is lifelong. We continue to read, study, and talk together as we grow in our conscious living of our faith.
We affirm the goodness of creation. God made us and said, “That is good.” We are respectful and avoid using fear, shame or guilt. Our lives are enriched by being church together.
With joy we share our time, our talents and our treasure in gratitude to God for the richness of life and the bounty of God’s blessing.
Our building is fully accessible to the handicapped.
Open and Affirming
Our congregation has publicly declared itself Open & Affirming. We are committed to including all persons, especially lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered persons into our community, life, and leadership.
The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)
North Side is a congregation in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
